Graduate Medical Education Committee Special, Focused and Periodic Program Review Policy

In the transition to the Next Accreditation System (NAS), the previous mid-accreditation cycle internal reviews were replaced with new methods for the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to demonstrate effective oversight of the Sponsoring Institution's accreditation status and Programs. In NAS, the GMEC is required to demonstrate effective oversight of underperforming programs through a Special Review process. The Special Review Policy describes the GMEC's protocol for oversight including the criteria for identifying thresholds of performance, program quality improvement goals, corrective actions and the processes for GMEC monitoring of outcomes. The University of Maryland Medical Center's (UMMC) GMEC Special, Focused and Periodic Program Review Policy describes the criteria for three levels of program reviews. This policy may be of help for institutions that are updating their current policies.
