Medical Student COVID-19 Curriculum: A Student-Created Publicly Available Online Resource

Description

In recognizing a need for high-quality educational materials on COVID-19, a team of students at Harvard Medical School created a free online curriculum for medical trainees. Since it was first published in mid-March, the resource has been accessed by tens of thousands of users from over 100 countries, with translations in over 12 languages. Content is faculty reviewed and regularly updated. The curriculum contains eight modules:

  • From Bench to Bedside
  • Epidemiology Principles
  • Health Disparities, Policy Changes, and Socioeconomic Effects in the U.S.
  • Mental Health in the Time of COVID-19
  • Communicating Information about COVID-19
  • Training for Potential Clinical Roles
  • Global Innovation and Collaboration
  • Medical Ethics in Relation to COVID-19

The modules incorporate case vignettes and interspersed thought questions to promote higher-order thinking. While the curriculum functions well as an entirely asynchronous, self-directed learning resource, it can also serve as core reference text for formal coursework. We have developed and would be happy to share assessment questions that can be used to measure learner engagement. If you are a faculty member interested in receiving such resources, please contact the authors.
