Telemedicine Approach to the Psychiatric Patient

Description

This course features a collection of readings, videos, modules, and Aquifer cases, and ends with a "telepsychiatry" standardized patient encounter. The goals of the course are to familiarize the student with important aspects of telemedicine and specifically telepsychiatry. The telepsychiatry toolkits offered by the American Psychiatric Association include advocacy issues, evidence base behind telemedicine, communication skills, malpractice and other legal issues, insurance reimbursement, documentation issues, patient safety, and more. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers a webinar on business aspects of medicine. For assigned readings, the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) provides Clinical Simulation eModules, and Aquifer cases provide students with the clinical knowledge they need of psychiatric disorders, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. The student's final assessment is based on their history taking skills during the standardized patient encounter and their psychiatric evaluation write-up. 
The following are the learning objectives: 

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of the legal issues, technical considerations, and practice and clinical issues surrounding telemedicine, including safety issues. 
  • Students will apply knowledge and diagnostic criteria in the assessment of a patient via telepsychiatry. 
  • Students will demonstrate ability to develop a therapeutic alliance and communicate effectively with a patient via telemedicine. 
  • Students will utilize best practices when delivering virtual care.
