An asynchronous online course designed to encourage the discussion and study of current and emerging healthcare and public health issues encountered with the COVID-19 Pandemic. The course covers the fundamental principles, management, and treatment of emerging respiratory viruses, and how to effectively respond to an outbreak by learning how to interpret new information using core principles of public health, epidemiology, medicine, health economics, and social science. Each week a module is assigned consisting of existing courses, readings, video lectures, assessments, and discussions. Students are asked to submit screenshots of progress or certificates for all course work, and a final project. Approximately 25 hours of work is assigned each week in the modules, with the other time intended to be spent on the final project.
The first week module covers the Biology, Epidemiology, and Public Heath Response to COVID-19. A discussion board welcomes the students asking them to share their view of the roles and responsibilities of their chosen profession/specialty/subspecialty in a pandemic setting. The Virology & pathology section is covered using Journal Articles and videos produced by our basic science faculty over virology. The video ends with prompts students are told to pause and discuss. The section on Prevention, Detection, Response, and Control includes: the WHO Emerging Respiratory Viruses Course & certificate, tracking and planning platforms to review bundled with a discussion board on Non-Medical Professionals contribution to pandemic preparedness and control, FEMA National Incident Management ICS Courses & certificates, an overview on key factors in human communication, and examples of communication (RHAT list of local rural health resources, evidence based Google Doc shared between COVID frontline visions, JH Agora Conversation - A World of Responses, articles covering modeling study and mitigation measures). A second discussion board in this section follows these resources with a prompt asking what elements were felt to be key for their profession/specialty/subspecialty to assist with preparedness and prevention. The Coursera Science Matters: Let's Talk About COVID-19 Course & certificate finishes off the week one assignment. The second week module focuses on managing the infection.
Week two starts with a reflective discussion board. A section on Diagnosis and Protection includes: a lecturio COVID-19 Video Course and article on etiology, epidemiology and diagnosis; an article covering child presentation; Virtual PPE MicroSim; and a Virtual patient COVID-19 case. A section on complications and management includes the COVID-19 diagnosis & management lecturio course, WHO clinical care severe Acute respiratory infection course, infogram on principles of airway management, and GLIBLIB Medical talks. The ACP telemedicine course in certificate follows this section. The end of week has two sections built for discussion. A discussion board and the PENN CHIME model are provided to prompt a discussion on social distancing. A discussion and articles and blogs on ethical decisions during a pandemic end the week 2 module.
The final project is presented during the first week and submitted at the end of the second week. Students must create and deliver an evidence-based presentation on how to prepare a team to respond to a different infectious disease of their choice. Member's roles and responsibilities should be defined and the communication plan to pull the team together. The student can create a narrated PowerPoint, zoom recording, or schedule a live zoom presentation.
