Virtual Interprofessional Learning Activity

Description

We have designed an alternative assignment to the Interprofessional Shadowing activity which is a component of the 1st year undergraduate medical students’ curriculum. This assignment was also considered a good opportunity to advance our interprofessional goals, hence we included other professions such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physiotherapy.

The goal of the shadowing experience is to learn about another health care provider’s job and scope of practice and to be able to identify ways that Health Care Professionals (HCP) work in teams with shared responsibility for patient care. When access to HCPs in clinical settings was lost, our Faculty’s IPE team looked for ways to meet the intended learning goals through a student-to-student interactive session. The alternative assignment consists of an Interprofessional semi-structured interview, which is a 30- to 45-minute virtual interaction between a medical student and a student or students in another health profession. Medical students are assigned to interview HCP student(s) to discuss with them the scope and nature of their day-to-day work in the clinical setting. Students are expected to demonstrate a high level of professional behaviour during the interview, and maintain confidentiality related to any patient care information discussed. All HCP students participating are then asked to debrief key learnings with their classmates and provide feedback on their experience.
