Telehealth for Continuity of Primary Care Medical Education During COVID-19

Description

Goal: To provide medical students with continued clinical experience in primary care / family medicine during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The included guides are intended for use by medical students, educators, course administrators, and clinical administrators. These can be utilized in on-boarding and preparing for a new web-based clinic workflow. Given the asynchronous nature of learning amidst the COVID pandemic, participants are given the documents as part of their orientation to seeing patients via telehealth. The introduction to Microsoft Teams in this extended spectrum of care will guide users through the software and enable them to have a productive clinical encounter including case presentation with a preceptor. The workflow is built to mirror the traditional in-person ambulatory care learning experience. Although Microsoft Teams was used at our institution, the workflow could easily be adapted to any telehealth audio-video client. The included guides are:

  • Telehealth Student Guide: Student-oriented guide highlighting the process of a patient encounter
  • Telehealth Preceptor Guide: Faculty-oriented guide highlighting options for suggested workflow with a student
  • Telehealth Troubleshooting: Guide to troubleshooting common technical issues that arise in working through telehealth encounters with Microsoft Teams
