Student Run Health Clinic at Riverside Trains Dental Students to Provide to the Underserved

With the rise of dental maladies at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Student-Run Health Clinic (SRHC), a project was initiated to combat the extreme dental needs of the community.

Western University of Health Sciences' College of Dental Medicine took part in allocating a dental component to the already established medical portion of the clinic.

Elmer Hilo, 2013 DMD candidate, and Timothy Martinez, DMD, Associate Dean for Community Partnerships and Access to Care at WesternU, spearheaded the project. With this union of UCR's medical students and Western University's dental students, an interprofessional and comprehensive mode of care was made available to the underserved population of Riverside. With assistance from multiple funding sources from the CDA Foundation and Riverside Community Health Foundation, an allowance of $7,500 and $10,000 were gained, respectively. The SRHC is able to provide basic dental care with no cost to the patient. The necessary equipment and materials were purchased to provide basic dental care. This equipment included supplies from Henry Schein as well as "DentalWRKS" mobile units. The care provided varies from preventative, restorative, and simple extractions. Dental students are able to see patients on a monthly basis while providing education in community dentistry. The interprofessional student-run clinic aims to improve the overall health and well-being of Riverside's underserved through free service. In addition to filling a need in the community, the SRHC serves as an institution to provide exposure to the intangible aspects of healthcare such as humanism and interprofessionalism alongside clinical experiences.
